Dear Legislator,

Please vote against all versions of House Bills 1357 and 1365.  The bills, if passed, would facilitate illegal discrimination.  Even well-intentioned landlords would be forced to engage in illegal racial profiling in order to comply with the law.

Further, the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center has reviewed the bill and determined that it is likely illegal under the federal Fair Housing Act as amended in 1988.  Passage of the bill into law could result in unnecessary litigation.  Further, states that receive CDBG funding are required to affirmatively further fair housing.  House Bills 1357 and 1365, would not only fail to affirmatively further fair housing, it would encourage housing discrimination across Louisiana.  If the bill were based, it may even endanger the Louisiana’s ability to receive CDBG funding.

Please vote against all versions of House Bills 1357 and 1365.

Sincerely,
