You Helped Put The Brakes On Mass Incarceration

Posted on 15. Apr, 2016 by

We’d like to thank all of you to took action and let legislators know that banning people with felonies from receiving public benefits violates the Fair Housing Act and would lead to more recidivism. Your overwhelming response flooded legislators’ inboxes with emails.

A State House committee was scheduled to vote on HB 263 on Wednesday, but your immediate action helped to have it dropped from the committee’s agenda.

This bill would have had catastrophic effects for people with criminal records and for local affordable housing funding. We will keep you updated, and will again ask for your assistance if the bill resurfaces during this legislative session.

Thank you for your support. Keep an eye out for future alerts—the state legislature is still considering bills on equal pay, LGBT protections, and a host of other important issues where your voice counts. And if you’re in the New Orleans area, please come celebrate our wins with us at our Fair Housing Happy Hour on May 3rd.
