Big Business Give-aways or Investments in Working Families

Posted on 22. Feb, 2016 by

Last week the state legislature began a special session to fix the enormous hole in the state budget. As legislators struggle to save the state’s economy, it is imperative that they fix our budget with—not on the backs of—Louisiana’s hardworking families. Will you join us?

Among the problems with our state budget is that Louisiana gave away $200 million more in tax credits to big business last year than they took in through corporate income tax. Meanwhile, many Louisiana families work hard but earn low wages that limit housing opportunities. In a state where nearly one-third of renters and homeowners pay more than 30% of their income towards housing costs, we cannot build our way out of the current housing crisis.

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is designed to help working families pay for the very things that allow them to continue working, such as child care and transportation. Louisiana House Speaker Pro Tempore Walt Leger has introduced a bill to double our state’s small contribution to the EITC.Will you take a moment right now to support his efforts?

The House is also considering a bill to completely eliminate the state’s EITC, so every effort to support Louisiana’s working families is needed. Please take a few seconds right now to urge your legislator to double the state EITC and help more than half of a million families across the state.
