A Brave Survivor

Posted on 16. Apr, 2015 by

Being attacked by a loved one is a traumatic experience. To then have to decide between calling for help or risking eviction from your home is simply deplorable.

Unfortunately, this scenario plays out every day in Louisiana. One of GNOFHAC’s clients is among the hundreds of women statewide who has faced this terrible choice. She chose her and her young son’s safety and called the police. She still sustained injuries serious enough to warrant an overnight hospital stay, and when she returned, she found a notice to vacate her apartment.

When Sen. Sharon Weston Broome (D-Baton Rouge) heard this story, she knew that she needed to do something to protect women across Louisiana. She introduced SB 174 to protect survivors of domestic violence from losing their housing because of the actions of their abusers.

Surveys from around the state show that one in three women in domestic violence shelters reported being evicted because of the violence of their abusers.

We’ll be spending a lot of time in Baton Rouge in the next two months working to secure justice for our client and for all Louisiana victims of domestic violence. This is a common sense solution to a shocking problem, but we’ll still need your help. Please keep an eye out for upcoming opportunities to tell your legislators to come together and support victims.
