✔ NO on Constitutional Amendment #3

Posted on 17. Oct, 2014 by

Fees for Sales of Property with Delinquent Taxes

The third constitutional amendment that appears on your ballot this November will ask you to authorize local governments to contract with a third party to collect delinquent taxes from property owners and charge a fee for third party services.

For homeowners that get behind on their taxes, local governments already charge interest, a collection fee, and a city fee on top of the tax or lien. If local governments outsource tax collection to a third party, the company should take a percentage of the sale at auction, not further gouge homeowners with an additional fee.

Helping homeowners to retain the house they own has become an important part of fair housing choice in the aftermath of disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and the foreclosure crisis, as long-time homeowners struggle to hold onto the houses they have. Louisiana homeowners already pay significant fees and interest on tax collection services, and local governments should pay for work that they outsource.
